Y fitness staff are gearing up for new building

A Note from Paul Garwood

Paul Garwood is Director of Fitness at the Y, managing group exercise classes, senior programs, men's basketball, personal training and youth fitness. Paul took a moment to share his excitement about a new home for the Y, and how his team is preparing.

Paul at 266 College Street

Throughout this new building process, I’ll be doing everything I can to create the best experience possible for our members. By assessing current fitness trends and listening to feedback from our members, my team and I are already playing a key role in creating the fitness space we all want in our new home.

In the coming months, I’ll be touring newly constructed Y’s throughout the Northeast, visiting one of the nation’s leading fitness equipment manufacturers, and attending the 2018 Athletic Business Show. A project of this size comes with immense pressure to meet the expectations and I’m working hard to exceed those expectations.

Our members have high hopes for the new facility and rightfully so. Members and visitors alike can expect an open, welcoming fitness environment with state of the art equipment and knowledgeable staff that is available at all times. I’m particularly excited that our new space will not only be handicap accessible, but we’ll offer accessible equipment that meets the needs of any user.

When we open the doors to our new home, it won’t be just about delivering a better experience, we will simply be able to offer more. Additional program spaces will allow us to deliver a robust and diverse group fitness schedule. But our new fitness center and studio spaces will offer more than just a great workout, it will encourage our members and staff to connect in a way that will build and strengthen a sense of community. Whether people introduce themselves for the first time, catch up on family and what is happening around town, or engage in a deeper conversation about fitness goals, the Y will be a place for connection.

Just like our members, our fitness staff is hungry for the new building and the increased capacity to deliver an expanded set of classes and programs. The new facility also offers an exciting opportunity to grow our corps of instructors, trainers, fitness center staff, and team members focused on new program development. I’m lucky to work with a group of dedicated colleagues who are as anxiously awaiting this new Y and I look forward to unleashing our team’s true potential.

I’m fortunate enough to have visited many Y’s over the years and I can tell you that nothing beats the feeling you get walking into a brand new Y. Combined with a dedicated staff driven by the Y’s core values and you have a winning formula. I can’t wait to see the faces of our members at our grand opening.

I’m confident that our new home will be all we want it to be and more. A successful campaign and new building will create a Y truly able to welcome all, one that is able to do more, give back, and meet the needs in our community. That’s something I’m excited to be a part of.
